Read On Fellow Corso Lovers!

My husband and I have been selectively breeding cane corso dogs since 2010. Here’s the story: I, Melissa, just having a baby myself, found a growly, blue puppy on the bed one morning. My husband surprised me with our first corso, and we named him Cain.

I wasn’t so sure about him at first; I had an infant, plus two other children to look after, and a new puppy in the household seemed to add to my list of chores. He certainly pooped a lot! And piddled, on our rented, wooden floors….and I was not very happy about a new addition to the family at first. Sure, the little thing was cute, but Cain was growly…when he ate, you did NOT want any little fingers by his food bowl.

He was grumpy and shy at first and just when I was about to splatter out my thoughts about ‘buyer’s remorse,’ one evening, while I was doing dishes, Cain came in and stood by my feet and just plopped himself there, on the floor. He stayed there through the whole load of dishes, kept my feet warm and I suddenly was forced to remember that he was a baby, too…looking for someone to love him like his mother did….clean him off after he eats….hold him while he fell asleep at night, just like any other baby wants.

Cain was attached to my heart from that point forward. And while his duties added more chores to my list, I gladly cleaned up after him, and began to house train him soon thereafter. As a biologist, I study animal behavior. Cain made it readily apparent that he was intelligent….dominant….loyal….protective…..all the things I had never noticed before in any other breed of dog I had ever interacted with. Those 4 traits were endearing to me, a curiosity to be studied and as I watched Cain grow into an adult dog, he never….ever…...not even once……failed to let me down on ANY of those 4 traits.
